Fallen rewrite!

Setting: A vacant city park after dark.
Stage: PETER looks into the shadows in response to hearing movement by a tree.
Peter: Who’s there? Al? I thought you were dead! I haven’t seen you in like, 20 years!
Angel: I am... ahhhh, or rather, I…used to be…an Angel of the Lord.
P: A what?! You sound like you’ve had too much to drink.
Stage: PETER sees the silhouette of the angel near a tree; the angel is still covered in shadows.
A: Come here.
P: I don’t think so…
A: COME! I say!
P:  Yeaaah…um…I think I had better be on my way…(Peter goes over to the Angel anyway--with great misgivings…)
Stage: PETER approaches the angel still unable to see him. ANGEL shifts into the light of a nearby street lamp which illuminates him. ANGEL is wearing white and is stained in blood, his wings have been cut, there are feathers strewn about him and there is much blood around him. ANGEL looks exhausted as if he has been through a great ordeal. PETER looks frightened and concerned.
P: What happened to you? Whose blood is that?
Stage: PETER continues to cautiously approach ANGEL.
A: Do not worry, it is mine. (Pause) There is no hope left. I have betrayed my Father.  I’ve been cast out.
P: Uh, huh.  Right…We need to get you to the hospital!
A: Please, just listen to me! My wings were taken from me, cut out with a knife…by…. My…. BROTHER’S HAND!
P: bullshit…maybe we can talk on the way…while you sober up a bit…
Stage: ANGEL turns slowly in place to show his damaged wings.
A: My wings have been cut, and I am not able to return to my Father’s kingdom. In the beginning I was sent to earth to destroy the city of Babylon,
P: whoa whoa whoa, Babylon? Bible Babylon? Al! You’re 45!
A: BUT! as the city lay in desolation, I could hear the cries of the people, those who finally understood the error of their ways and repented. When I asked my Father if I may help those left to die, he told me,
Voiceover: “nay.  The people of Babylon are a wicked and conceited people. They must be made an example of for all of the world.”
A: I disobeyed His orders. I tried to help the hurt and dying in Babylon.
P: (Pause) Ok, but if you were some angel of the Lord, why wouldn’t he just forgive you and take you back into heaven?  Besides what you did didn’t sound so bad to me…to help the hurt and the dying…
A: Even if he were a forgiving God, which he’s NOT!!! I went against His will and entered the city to seek out those who were left to die. I found, in the rubble near the ruins of the great temple, a woman holding a child. She was barely alive, and the infant had already died. I snatched her away from death and carried her into the wilderness where we found a grove of trees. I nursed her back to health, but then I could not leave her...
P: (jumping in) bullshit!
A: Patience! So many questions. (Pause as he gathers himself.) I could not leave her because I knew she would perish on her own.  I stayed and cared for her. In time we became close. I began to fall in love with her. I decided to put aside my duties as an Angel…and responsibility to God… and have a mortal existence; I married her and had two wonderful children. We were so happy.
P: Do you mean Barbara and your kids?
A: BUT when my Father God heard of my iniquitous actions and shameful indulgence in human desires, he struck down my family… and forced me to return home to him. (Stage: ANGEL shows great pain in his voice, shaky at first then regains composure).
P: Was that the car crash? I thought you were in that car?
A: (long pause as the angel looks at Peter with kind eyes.) You do not understand the Lord nor the gravity of my situation. (Pause) When I was once more an angel, He did take me back into heaven, but after returning home, I never did feel the same. I could not be the Angel I once was. I rebelled against my father and refused to aid in the destruction of other cities. There came a day when my Father decided to destroy another great nation, and I could not allow this and I was banished from my father’s presence.
Stage: ANGEL stands up, a little shaky at first, but then showing dedication and vigor. PETER looks shocked and quickly approaches ANGEL to aid him as he stands, but ANGEL collapses under his own weight and into PETER'S arms; PETER helps ANGEL back to the ground.
P: (Inspects where the angel’s wings used to be more closely) OK… what do you want me to do?
A: I must not give up!
P: What do you mean? Give up?
A: Have you not pieced it together yet? It was my duty to see to the destruction of THIS, nation, your home. My Father tried to turn me into an Angel of Death, but that is someone I never could be.  So I lie here in my own blood and despair, with no hope of returning to heaven … I must do what I can to help this nation but not as a Fallen Angel… but as a man.
